Third National Park bid rejected

A bid by the island of Harris in the Outer Hebrides to become Scotland's third national park has been rejected by ministers.

Residents voted more than two-to-one in favour of the move in 2009 after a study suggested it would create jobs and reverse population decline, but Western Isles Council failed to back it.

Scotland's environment minister Roseanna Cunningham has now announced the idea will not be progressed.
"Unfortunately, the council considers that, at this stage, a convincing case has not been identified for a formal designation," a Scottish Government statement said.
